CONCURSO INTERNACIONAL – TRIENAL DE LISBOA “A HOUSE IN LUANDA: PATIO AND PAVILION”

patio interno 01

MEMORIAL
1. Plot and Public
This proposal investigates the impacts of disciplined plot typology on informal urban environments. A reflection on the meaning of the patio-enclosed-by-wall condition in this context, led us to question its intrinsic spatial qualities. It is clear that due to its ambiguous, opening / enclosing, inwards / outwards, condensing / spreading qualities, the elements patio and wall can stimulate or interrupt social interaction. The usage of these architectural elements, in a fragile human context such as Luanda’s outskirts, demands a whole new approach.

2. Wall as Patio
The unfolding of this condition led us to merge the wall and patio into a single construction element that clearly defines the limits of the plot. Thick adobe masonry walls filled in with earth and excavation spoil, are strategically positioned in order to establish different levels of publicness within the plot: public, private and semi-public. When articulated into an urban block, the limits between each plot merge into a continuous and boundless new territory.

A. House and Construction
The dwelling program fits into this new extruded topography through a pair of overhanging pre-cast concrete slabs, resting on four pairs of reinforced concrete pillars. The collective domain is at the front side of the house, under the first slab, where the family has its meals and celebrates with their guests. The opposite side is the intimate domain, over the back¬yard slab, where the family sleeps. This opposition between the two programmatic blocks determines distinct slab usage: a constructive operation which embodies the house and family growth potential, leaving a 100 m2 area for future extension

B. Materials and Time
The basic structural framework establishes the house’s spatial concept and its programmatic organization: low-cost adobe masonry walls filled in with earth and excavating spoil material, and pre-cast concrete slabs shelters. These features offer a flexible condition where the dwellers have several options on how to modify or expand their house, according to their needs and the technical skills they may have access to. The materials palette selected for the first stage of the dwelling displays light-weight, easy-handling OSB panels in the bedrooms; rough compacted soil floors and unfinished walls; mullion framed mosquito nets replacing glass openings; metal sheet roofing; detachable wooden staircase. In due time, all of these initial features should give place to new materials and new family organizations: the whole construction dynamically adapts to the ever-changing life conditions in Luanda.
